VGA 2011 - My Picks

Yes, this post is about video games.  Now as a disclaimer, these are MY opinions about games, so there will be some bias but I will do my best to pick the deserving game.  I'm going to go on the record by saying that I hate Elder Scrolls and Nintendo, so if you have a hard on for these games or studios, you should probably look elsewhere.  That being said, let's proceed!

STUDIO OF THE YEAR

Bethesda Game Studios
Naughty Dog
Rocksteady Studios
Valve

-- For the record, all the nominees in this category aren't very good ones because they each did only like one notable game.

BEST XBOX 360 GAME

Batman: Arkham City
Forza Motorsport 4
Gears of War 3
Portal 2

-- Gears sucks, Forza isn't much better, so Batman it is.

BEST PS3 GAME

inFAMOUS 2
Killzone 3
LittleBigPlanet 2
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

-- This one was pretty clear cut.

BEST Wii GAME

Disney’s Epic Mickey
Kirby’s Return to Dream Land
Lost in Shadow
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

-- I'm obligated to pick this one because the Wii as a whole sucks, but this is the diamond amongst mere stones.

BEST PC GAME

Battlefield 3
Minecraft
The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
Portal 2

-- Tough category.  The Witcher was not my game, neither is Minecraft but I acknowledge it's greatness.  Battlefield was completely awesome, but I think Portal had that something extra.

BEST HANDHELD/MOBILE GAME

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
Infinity Blade
Super Mario 3D Land
Jetpack Joyride

-- No contest, haven't played a single one of these games.

BEST SHOOTER

Battlefield 3
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Gears of War 3
Rage

-- Rage was cool, but Battlefield has jets.  And 64 player online.  That's pretty cool.

BEST ACTION ADVENTURE GAME

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
Batman: Arkham City
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

-- Tough category for me.  Loved AC and Batman, but they are so similar to their previous iterations that Uncharted had to take it.  Uncharted is unique because even though the game stays fairly straightforward between iterations, the stories, settings, and set piece moments change so dramatically that it really feels like a new game.  Although, I freaking loved Batman.

BEST RPG

Dark Souls
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Dragon Age II
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

-- In all fairness, I haven't played any of these games, and I felt like giving it to Dark Souls because that was an indie release.  But alas, I'm giving it to Elder Scrolls because I have far too many friends that get hot and bothered because of that game.

BEST MULTI-PLAYER

Battlefield 3
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Gears of War 3
Portal 2

-- Did I mention 64-person multiplayer and jets?!

BEST INDIVIDUAL SPORTS GAME

Fight Night Champion
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters
Top Spin 4
Virtua Tennis 4

-- Never really enjoyed Tennis games (except for Mario) and golf is more boring in a game than in real life, and Fight Night was great, minus the very last fight which was retarded.

BEST TEAM SPORTS GAME

FIFA Soccer 12
NBA 2K12
NHL 12
MLB ’11: The Show

-- God FIFA was awesome.  Like, so good.

BEST DRIVING GAME

DiRT 3
Driver: San Francisco
Forza Motorsport 4
Need For Speed: The Run

-- Not a strong year for racing games IMO, but Forza was spectacular despite my disdain for serious racing, NFS was super lame this year.

BEST FIGHTING GAME

The King of Fighters XIII
Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
Mortal Kombat
WWE All Stars

-- MK wins because it was the first TRUE MK game for next gen consoles.  MK vs. DCU was an insult to the brand and it should be stricken from the record.

BEST MOTION GAME

Child of Eden
Dance Central 2
The Gunstringer
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

-- Who doesn't like dancing like an idiot in front of their friends?!

BEST INDEPENDENT GAME

Bastion
Minecraft
Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP
The Binding of Isaac

-- Loved Bastion, so awesome.

BEST ADAPTED VIDEO GAME

Back to the Future: The Game
Batman: Arkham City
Captain America: Super Soldier
LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars

-- If I need to explain this, it's because you've never played Batman.

BEST SONG IN A GAME

“Build that Wall (Zia’s Theme)” by Darren Korb – Bastion
“Exile Vilify” by The National – Portal 2
“I’m Not Calling You a Liar” by Florence + the Machine – Dragon Age II
“Setting Sail, Coming Home (End Theme)” by Darren Korb – Bastion
“Want You Gone” by Jonathan Coulton – Portal 2

-- I wish I had a vote for this.  I might update this later and listen to all these songs.  Although, I'm inclined to give it to Portal because "Still Alive" is still stuck in my head.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE

Bastion
Batman: Arkham City
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Portal 2

-- Same as above.

BEST GRAPHICS

Batman: Arkham City
LA Noire
Rage
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

-- LA Noire wins on the basis of the facial capture, and Uncharted is VERY close second.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A HUMAN MALE

J.K. Simmons as Cave Johnson – Portal 2
Mark Hamill as The Joker – Batman: Arkham City
Nolan North as Nathan Drake – Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Stephen Merchant as Wheatley – Portal 2

-- You know what makes Drake better than Indiana Jones?  He is a hell of a lot more funny and has much more personality.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A HUMAN FEMALE
Claudia Black as Chloe Frazer – Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Ellen McLain as GLaDOS – Portal 2
Emily Rose as Elena Fisher – Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Tara Strong as Harley Quinn – Batman: Arkham City

-- GLaDOS makes Portal.  Period.

BEST DOWNLOADABLE GAME

Bastion
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
Stacking
Trenched

-- Bastion was awesome, but Stacking was a very close second.

BEST DLC

Fallout: New Vegas – Old World Blues
Mass Effect 2: Arrival
Mortal Kombat: Freddy Krueger
Portal 2 Peer Review

-- No contest, only played Mass Effect DLC

MOST ANTICIPATED GAME

BioShock: Infinite
Diablo III
Halo 4
Mass Effect 3
The Last Guardian

-- This is a tie for me.  Diablo is my favorite game of all time and I would sell a part of my soul to play the game now.  Mass Effect has captivated me in a way that companies can only dream of so needless to say I am buying the overpriced, unnecessary, ridiculous collector's editions of each of these games.  I've gotten less excited about Bioshock after watching gameplay and who gives a flying F$&K about Halo.  If you would have asked me this last year I would have said The Last Guardian, but no new developments in a year have served to lessen my interest, although I will probably Day 1 that game, no doubt.

GAME OF THE YEAR
Batman: Arkham City
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Portal 2
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

-- I almost said Batman, but it really did feel like Arkham Asylum but on a slightly bigger map.  Uncharted really is the same game in control scheme, but the new environments and settings make it a completely new experience.  Portal was great as well, and I think that for a game that pretty much evolved from an experiment, it's rather impressive and deserving of a GOTY award, just not this year.
